What is the Inhibitor Gene?
In a standard solid or tabby cat, color runs all the way down the hair shaft. However, in a Shaded Maine Coon, the inhibitor gene (represented as “I”) stops the pigment from developing at the root.
The Halo Effect: Only about 25% of the hair tip carries color, creating a “shaded” look.
The Silver Base: The remaining 75% of the hair is a pure, sparkling silver-white.
The Shimmer: This contrast is what creates that magical “shimmer” whenever the cat moves.
